As I step off the bus on a brisk October morning, I feel the cool air surround my body biting into every layer of clothing I possess, stunning my every sense. During my moment of paralysis, I couldn’t help but notice something, but it wasn’t something you can taste or touch; it was something that you could see in every individual. There it was – determination, pride, and the hunger for victory. For them it wasn’t just any other meet; it was regionals,  their one and only chance at making it to states.

The Cross Country regional meet was hosted in Waterford, Michigan on one of the most grueling courses in the state, and every runner there had to attack the course with everything they had because they would be tested on not only their physical strength, but their perseverance as well.

As tradition, the women’s race started first. With the sound of the gun, immediately you felt the pounding of the earth as it spiraled up into your leg, tearing into your ear drums, and although the women’s team didn’t qualify for states, one individual did.

Freshman Aubrey Frey, running a time of 21:42, fought her way into states and though only one women on the team qualified, despite their best efforts, there was some fantastic news for the boys team.

The boys team took third at regionals, qualifying all seven of the guys to race in the state meet. It will take a lot of work to make it to nationals, but their dream is that much closer.
