It’s time for the holidays which means there will be many fundraisers and donation boxes on every corner. Donating to charity in any way, shape, or form is a great thing to do, especially during the holidays. Many people are in need, but maybe you shouldn’t think about doing that canned food drive this year.  Think about donating money instead.

Canned foods are beneficial in some ways, but not in as many ways as other donations can be. Canned foods are heavy and hard to transport. When schools and other places try to gather cans for the season, they often have to go through a lot of transporting – from the homes of the people fundraising, to the place of fundraising, to the food bank, and to the home of the family in need.

Another problem with donating canned goods to food banks is the issue of what it is worth. Food banks can buy food for the absolute lowest value; a regular consumer at a grocery store will pay four to five times as much as a food bank will pay. This is a significant decrease in value, making donating money much more beneficial.

For this holiday season, think about donating money instead of having that canned drive. Money is a lot more valuable, as food banks can purchase so much more with that money. They know what food and materials are truly needed, and transporting can be so much easier.
