Most can relate to the excitement that we got as kids when we saw someone breaking out the Battleship board or the Jenga blocks. Even as adults, most know of the classics like Monopoly, Clue, and many more. Such a well-known media of entertainment brings up many questions, one being “How did someone get the idea for these games?”

Hungry Hungry Hippos

Hungry Hungry Hippos was first sold in stores in 1966. This tabletop game was made to be directly sold to stores so Hasbro could make a few quick bucks. But little did the company know that they had just released one of the most well-known board games. The game even had edits done for certain occasions and countries. In some of the newer versions of the game, the orange hippo has been replaced with the color blue, and South America has a pastel version of the Hungry Hungry Hippos that even give the hippos different names.

Jenga

Jenga was created by Leslie Scott, who at the age of 18, moved to Ghana with her family. Ghana is a place rich with wood, and they would often play games very similar to the current day Jenga with the pieces of wood found in the area. Leslie went to Oxford in her 20s, showed her game to her fellow dorm mates, and they became obsessed with it. It was then that Leslie Scott decided to put her toy on the market.

Monopoly

Monopoly can be traced back to the early 1900s and was created by Elizabeth Maggie. Maggie was a powerful feminist that wished to show the world truly how evil the economic system was. Although it was believed that Charles Dowall created the game and most of the current rules for it, a large number of such claims have been proven false.
