A common thought about the once renowned prison, Alcatraz, was that it was inescapable, but was it truly?

According the Washington Post, a recent letter revealed by the FBI dating back to 2013 suggests that escape is possible. An escape that occured in June of 1962, which has puzzled the police for years now, has evidence to suggest that the convicts were able to break out from the cursed “Rock”, as it is often called.

Three men, Frank Morris and brothers Clarence and John Anglin, escaped in the middle of the night with makeshift paper mache heads made from real hair from the barber, where it was laying on their beds, as well as using a drill to make multiple items, including a motor of a vacuum cleaner, according to the FBI.

Using the drill, they proceeded to undo the screws in the air vent and covered this with multiple items, including a fake mold of the air vent. The men crawled through the hole in the middle of the night and climbed the pipes lining the wall behind the cell. In order to get through the tough waters, the men fashioned a boat out of multiple raincoats.

The next morning, police found tattered clothing in the water as well as the remains of the lifeboat. While many presumed them dead, some suggested that they had made it.

It wasn’t until late January of 2018 that the FBI released a letter from a man claiming to be John Anglin. In the letter, “John” states that, “Yes we all made it that night but barely!”

The man claiming to be John says that the other two had passed away, but he was still alive. He also claims that if it is announced on TV, he will agree to be taken to jail for less than a year and receive medical care for his cancer; then he will reveal his location.

Though results came back inconclusive, the mystery still remains: did Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin make it off the island?
